The unifying theme of the Bible is God’s plan to dwell among His people. He promised in .11-12, “I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people.” What an amazing thought that the transcendent Sovereign of the universe would personally dwell among finite creatures. Yet prophesy of the end times confirms, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God” (.3). But a holy God cannot dwell with sinners. In order for God to dwell with His people, they must be perfect as he is perfect.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the solution to this problem. Jesus Christ is Immanuel — “God with us” (.23). The Son of God lived among men in order that he may atone for the sin of His people. He died in their place, rose victorious over sin and death, and now stands as their advocate at the throne of God. Those who repent and trust in him are declared righteous and may have confidence in a future where God will indeed personally dwell with them.

The hymns of the Church have always provided a wonderful means of proclaiming this good news. Rich, gospel-centered hymn texts serve to reveal important biblical truths to the minds of unbelievers and believers alike.

But good hymns serve another important purpose: they teach us which affections form appropriate responses to the truths of the gospel. It is not enough to simply intellectually assent to biblical truth; worship is an appropriate response of the spirit — the affections — to that truth (). Good hymns teach us those appropriate affections. They are, in the words of Martin Luther, the “mistress of the emotions.” And then good hymns give us a language to express those affections to the Lord when mere words are inadequate.

Our burden with this album is to introduce and re-introduce good hymnody, both ancient and modern, that best serves these purposes. These hymns profoundly proclaim the precious truths of the gospel. These hymns beautifully package those truths with ordinate affections through their musical settings. And these hymns offer the believer a language for expressing these right affections as we consider the good news of God with us.

Track Name: God Himself Is With Us
God Himself is with us: Let us now adore Him,
And with awe appear before Him.
God is in His temple, all within keep silence,
Prostrate lie with deepest reverence.
Him alone God we own, Him our God and Savior;
Praise His Name forever.

O, Thou Fount of Blesing, purify my spirit,
I trust only in Thy merit,
Like Thy Holy angels, who behold Thy glory,
May I never cease to Praise Thee.
And in all great and small, seek to do most nearly
What Thou lovest dearly.

Come celestial Being, Make our hearts Your dwelling,
Ev’ry carnal thought dispelling.
By Your Holy Spirit Sanctify us truly,
Teaching us to love You only.
Where we go here below, let us bow before You
And in truth adore You.

God reveals His presence; Hear the music sounding;
Alleluias ring around Him.
“Holy, holy, holy!” Hear the hymn ascending,
All the saints their voices blending.
Bow your ear to us here: Hear, O Christ, the praises
That your Church now raises!
Alleluia, Amen.
Track Name: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name
Holy God, we praise Thy Name;
Lord of all, we bow before Thee!
All on earth Thy scepter claim,
All in Heaven above adore Thee;
Infinite Thy vast domain,
Everlasting is Thy reign.

Hark! the loud celestial hymn
Angel choirs above are raising,
Cherubim and seraphim,
In unceasing chorus praising;
Fill the heavens with sweet accord:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord.

Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, Three we name Thee;
While in essence only One,
Undivided God we claim Thee;
And adoring bend the knee,
While we own the mystery.
Track Name: Let Us Give the Lord Our Praise
Let us give the Lord our praise!
From His hand come all things good.
Give Him glory all our days
For His gracious Fatherhood.
Those delighting in the Lord
Find their heart’s desires outpoured.
Let us give the Lord our praise!

Let us give the Lord our thanks!
Grace He gives, though ill-deserved.
Though we joined the sinful ranks,
He, through death, our lives preserved.
Condemnation was our lot,
But in love our souls He bought.
Let us give the Lord our thanks!

Let us give the Lord our lives!
Goodness comes from God above.
See the mercy that He gives:
Bounteous blessings shown in love.
Trust the Lord in all your ways.
Fill your days with endless praise.
Let us give the Lord our lives!
Track Name: Of the Father's Love Begotten
Of the Father’s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been,
And that future years shall see, evermore and evermore!

O that birth forever blessèd, when the virgin, full of grace,
By the Holy Ghost conceiving, bare the Savior of our race;
And the Babe, the world’s Redeemer,
First revealed His sacred face, evermore and evermore!

O ye heights of heaven adore Him; angel hosts, His praises sing;
Powers, dominions, bow before Him, and extol our God and King!
Let no tongue on earth be silent,
Every voice in concert sing, evermore and evermore!
Track Name: Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted
Stricken, smitten, and afflicted,
See Him dying on the tree!
‘Tis the Christ by man rejected;
Yes, my soul, ’tis He,
‘Tis the long expected Prophet,
David’s Son, yet David’s Lord;
By His Son God now has spoken:
‘Tis the true and faithful Word.

Tell me, all who hear Him groaning,
Was there ever grief like His?
Friends through fear His cause disowning,
Foes insulting His distress;
Many hands were raised to wound Him,
None would intervene to save;
But the deepest stroke that pierced Him
Was the stroke that Justice gave.

You who think of sin but lightly
Nor suppose the evil great
Here may view its nature rightly,
Here its guilt may estimate.
Mark the Sacrifice appointed,
See Who bears the awful load;
‘Tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed,
Son of Man and Son of God.

Here we have a firm foundation,
Here the refuge of the lost;
Christ’s the Rock of our salvation,
His the name of which we boast.
Lamb of God, for sinners wounded,
Sacrifice to cancel guilt!
None shall ever be confounded
Who on Him their hope have built.
Track Name: My Song is Love Unknown
My song is love unknown,
My Savior’s love to me;
Love to the loveless shown,
That they might lovely be.
O who am I, that for my sake
My Lord should take, frail flesh and die?

Sometimes they strew His way,
And His sweet praises sing;
Resounding all the day
Hosannas to their King:
Then “Crucify!” is all their breath,
And for His death they thirst and cry.

Why, what hath my Lord done?
To cause this rage and spite?
He made the lame to run,
He gave the blind their sight,
Sweet injuries! Yet they at these
Are why the Lord most High so cruely dies.

Here might I stay and sing,
Of Him my soul adores;
Never was love, dear King!
Never was grief like yours.
This is my Friend, in Whose sweet praise
I all my days could gladly spend.
Track Name: Priest and Victim, Jesus Dies
Priest and victim, Jesus dies–
Gives himself in sacrifice,
Christ, the sinless Son of God,
Offers up for us his blood,
Gives himself in sacrifice–
Priest and victim, Jesus dies!

Mighty Victor, see him rise,
Bringing man to paradise;
Sin and death no more may claim
Those who trust his saving name:
Bringing man to paradise,
Mighty Victor, see him rise!

King forever, he shall reign,
Lord of death, and sin, and pain;
Pure and righteous, strong and free,
He shall rule with equity:
Lord of death, and sin, and pain,
King forever, he shall reign!
Track Name: Jesus Christ is Ris'n Today
Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia!
our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!
unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia!
who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains which he endured, Alleluia!
our salvation have procured, Alleluia!
now above the sky he’s King, Alleluia!
where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!
Track Name: I Will Arise and Go to Jesus
Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love and power.

Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,
God’s free bounty glorify;
True belief and true repentance,
Every grace that brings you nigh.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Lost and ruined by the fall;
If you tarry till you’re better,
You will never come at all.

I will arise and go to Jesus,
He will embrace me in His arms;
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O there are ten thousand charms.
Track Name: God of Grace
God of grace, amazing wonder,
Irresistible and free;
Oh, the miracle of mercy
Jesus reaches down to me.
God of grace, I stand in wonder,
As my God restores my soul.
His own blood has paid my ransom;
Awful cost to make me whole.

God of grace, who loved and knew me
Long before the world began;
Sent my Saviour down from heaven;
Perfect God and perfect man.
God of grace, I trust in Jesus;
I’m accepted as His own.
Every day His grace sustains me,
As I lean on Him alone.

God of grace, I stand astounded,
Cleansed, forgiven and secure.
All my fears are now confounded
And my hope is ever sure.
God of grace, now crowned in glory,
Where one day I’ll see Your face;
And forever I’ll adore You
In Your everlasting grace.
Track Name: My God, I Love Thee
My God, I love Thee; not because
I hope for Heav’n thereby,
Nor yet for fear that loving not
I might forever die;
But for that thou didst all mankind
Upon the cross embrace;
For us didst bear the nails and spear,
And manifold disgrace;

And griefs and torments numberless,
And sweat of agony;
E’en death itself, and all for man,
Who was thine enemy.
Then why, most loving Jesus Christ,
Should I not love thee well?
Not for the sake of winning heav’n,
Nor any fear of hell;

Not with the hope of gaining aught,
Not seeking a reward,
But as thyself has loved me,
O ever loving Lord!
E’en so I love thee, and will love,
And in thy praise will sing,
Solely because thou art my God
And my eternal King!
Track Name: Lord, We Bow Before Your Glory
Lord, we bow before Your glory
Manifested in Your Son.
Radient with Your perfect beauty
He is Heav’ns’ Beloved One.
Saving grace has giv’n us vision,
Opened eyes that once were blind,
He on whom we brought derision
Now delights our heart and mind.

Such a Savior, now exalted,
Well deserves our heart-felt praise.
Dying He has death defeated;
Ris’n he reigns for endless days.
Now in heaven interceding;
Jesus, Friend of Sinners, prays
For the weakest, daily pleading;
All sufficient is His grace.

O that we might know you better,
Jesus Christ, our living Lord.
Let our love grow daily better
As we hear your Holy Word.
There you have revealed your glory,
There we marvel at your grace.
Feed our souls and make us like you
‘Till we see you face to face.
Track Name: The Power of the Gospel
The power of the gospel
Bursts forth within the heart;
With radiant beams of blessing,
It bids the dark depart.
The power of the gospel,
With resurrection might,
Enlivens desperate sinners
To free them from death’s plight.

The power of the gospel
Transforms the heart of stone
To love no earthly idols
And follow Christ alone.
The power of the gospel
Renews the mangled mind
From glory unto glory,
By God’s right Word refined.

The power of the gospel
Will sound the victory
When Jesus comes in triumph
To set His servants free.
The power of the gospel
Will gather every race
To bow before their Savior
And glory in His grace.
Track Name: How Sweet and Awful
How sweet and awful is the place
With Christ within the doors,
While everlasting love displays
The choicest of her stores.

“Why was I made to hear Thy voice,
And enter while there’s room,
When thousands make a wretched choice,
And rather starve than come?”

‘Twas the same love that spread the feast
That sweetly forced us in;
Else we had still refused to taste,
And perished in our sin.

Pity the nations, O our God,
Constrain the earth to come;
Send Thy victorious word abroad,
And bring the strangers home.
Track Name: To Be With Christ
This world is beautiful and bright,
O scarce one cloud has dimmed my sky,
And yet no gloomy shades of night
Are gath’ring ’round me though I die;
Yet there’s a lov’lier land of light,
Illum’d by Bethle’m’s beaming Star;
E’en now it burst upon my sight,
To be with Christ is better far.

True, life is sweet, and friends are dear,
And youth and health are pleasant things,
Yet, leave I all, without a tear,
No sad regret my bosom wrings.
The ties of earth are broken all,
My chainless soul, above yon star,
Shall wing its way beyond recall,
To be with Christ is better far.

And is this death? My soul is calm,
No sting is here, the strife is done;
Glory to God, and to the Lamb!
Sweet trimph! I have won, I’ve won!
A crown immortal, robes of white,
For me, for me in waiting are;
Arrayed in glory, clothed in light,
To be with Christ is better far.
Track Name: God Himself Is With Us (Reprise)
God reveals His presence; Hear the music sounding;
Alleluias ring around Him.
“Holy, holy, holy!” Hear the hymn ascending,
All the saints their voices blending.
Bow your ear to us here: Hear, O Christ, the praises
That your Church now raises!
Alleluia, Amen.
